Where can you have an orthodontic examination in Ankara?

For an orthodontic examination in Ankara, our clinic is located in Park Oran Ofis (Dükkan No:70) on Kudüs Caddesi in the Oran neighborhood of the Çankaya district. The building is next to Panora Mall and opposite One Tower Mall. The orthodontic examination and treatment planning are carried out by Funda Pekyılmaz Sarıkaya, specialist orthodontist (Uzm. Dt.). On this page you can find which treatments the clinic provides, what happens at the first appointment and when it makes sense to see an orthodontist.

What is the difference between an orthodontist and a general dentist?

An orthodontist is a dentist who, after completing dental school, has undergone several years of specialty training in orthodontics. Their area of expertise is the alignment of the teeth, the position of the lower and upper jaws relative to each other (the bite) and guiding jaw development in children. A general dentist provides care in many areas such as fillings, root canal treatment and gum care; decisions about crowding, bite problems or jaw development, however, require an orthodontic assessment. We explain this in more detail in our article the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist.

Which orthodontic treatments are provided at the clinic?

  • Clear aligner treatment: The clinic uses the Invisalign system. Impressions are taken with the iTero intraoral scanner, and tooth movement is planned in the ClinCheck software.
  • Fixed braces: The classic treatment using brackets (small holders) bonded to the teeth and a wire attached to them. Details are on our braces in Ankara page.
  • Early orthodontics for children: Guiding treatments during the primary and mixed dentition stages, such as jaw expansion, space maintainers and habit-breaking appliances.
  • Retention: A retainer or fixed wire used to keep the teeth in place after treatment ends.

You can see the general framework of all the options together on our orthodontic treatments page.

What happens at the first orthodontic appointment?

The first appointment is an assessment appointment; treatment does not start on the same day. The orthodontist first listens to your complaint and expectations, then examines the teeth, gums, bite and jaw joint. If needed, a panoramic X-ray (a film showing all the teeth in one image) and a cephalometric film (a side view showing the relationship between the skull and the jaws) are requested. A three-dimensional model of the teeth can be taken with the iTero scanner.

After these records, it is discussed whether the problem is dental or skeletal (caused by the position of the jawbones), which methods can be used and what the estimated duration looks like. Fee information is also given in writing after the examination and planning. If you want to be well prepared for the examination, our orthodontic consultation question list may be useful.

At what age should you see an orthodontist?

There is no upper age limit for an orthodontic assessment. International orthodontic associations recommend a first check-up for children at around age 7; treatment does not always start at this age, but monitoring of jaw development and the eruption pattern of the permanent teeth begins. In teenagers, treatment is usually planned after the permanent teeth have all come in. In adults, orthodontic treatment can be done as long as the gums and bone support are healthy. For differences by age, see our clear aligners and age page.

Which signs make an orthodontic examination necessary?

If any of the following applies, an orthodontic assessment is worthwhile:

  • Teeth overlapping each other (crowding) or noticeable gaps between them
  • Front teeth not touching when the mouth is closed, or the upper teeth completely covering the lower teeth
  • Lower teeth closing in front of the upper teeth, or the jaw shifting to one side
  • Difficulty chewing or speaking, biting the cheek or palate
  • In children, baby teeth falling out very early or very late, thumb sucking, mouth breathing
  • Teeth starting to shift again in people who have had orthodontic treatment before

Some of these signs are purely dental, while others relate to jaw development. Which applies and whether treatment is needed is assessed at the examination.

How is progress monitored during treatment?

Orthodontic treatment is a process lasting months and requires regular follow-up. With fixed braces, check-ups are usually every 4–8 weeks; with clear aligner treatment, mostly every 6–10 weeks. At each check-up, whether the teeth are progressing according to plan, the condition of the gums and oral hygiene are assessed. After treatment ends, check-up appointments are also scheduled at set intervals during the retention period.

How do you get to the clinic from different parts of Ankara?

Patients come to the clinic from many neighborhoods of Ankara. Those coming from the west side usually head toward Oran via Eskişehir Yolu, while those coming from the center travel south via Kızılay and Kavaklıdere. Travel time varies considerably depending on traffic and time of day. Frequently asked questions

Do I need a referral to see an orthodontist in Ankara?

No referral is needed for an orthodontic examination at private practices and polyclinics. You can book an appointment directly by phone or WhatsApp. If your dentist has previously referred you because of a specific issue, bringing your X-rays and notes to the exam helps the orthodontist assess your situation more quickly.

How long does a first orthodontic consultation take?

The first examination usually takes less than an hour; however, it may take longer if X-rays and a digital scan are done at the same appointment. Treatment does not start at this visit; the condition of your teeth and jaws is evaluated and suitable options are discussed. If you ask whether records will be taken when booking, you can plan your time accordingly.

How does an orthodontist decide which treatment method is right for me?

The decision is made jointly, based on the type of problem, whether it is dental or skeletal, your age, your oral hygiene and your daily life. In some cases both clear aligners and braces can be used; in others, one gives more predictable results. The orthodontist explains the options, the expected duration and the limitations; you make the final choice once you are informed.

At what age should I take my child to an orthodontist?

A first orthodontic check-up is recommended at around age 7. Most children do not need treatment at this age; the orthodontist evaluates jaw development, conditions that may need early intervention such as a crossbite, and the eruption pattern of the permanent teeth. If necessary, follow-up at set intervals is planned. If there are habits such as thumb sucking or mouth breathing, coming in earlier can be helpful.

Can I have an orthodontic consultation in a foreign language at the clinic?

Yes. In addition to Turkish, the examination and treatment process can be conducted in English, German and Russian. For international patients living in Ankara and families who grew up abroad, the treatment plan, wear instructions and check-up information are explained in these languages. Simply mention your preferred language when booking your appointment.

Can I continue orthodontic treatment started at another clinic here?

This is evaluated at the examination. The orthodontist reviews your current appliance or aligners, any previous records and the current position of your teeth. In some cases, treatment can continue where it left off; in others, new records and a new plan are needed. Requesting your treatment plan and X-rays from your previous clinic speeds up the process.
