Can I get clear aligner treatment if I live outside Ankara?
Yes. Many people who live in another city or abroad are able to continue their orthodontic treatment in Ankara. Clear aligner treatment can mean fewer clinic visits than fixed braces, because the aligners are changed at home at set intervals and you do not need to come to the clinic for each change. Even so, some steps of treatment can only be done at the clinic, and regular check-ups are needed for treatment to progress as planned.
This page answers the three questions out-of-town patients ask most: How many times do I need to come? What happens in between? What do I do if a problem comes up? The exact number of visits depends on how complex your case is and is planned together with you at the first exam.
Which steps must be done at the clinic?
Although clear aligner treatment relies on digital planning, the start and check-up stages have to be done in person. The table below gives a general framework:
| Stage | What is done? | Can it be done remotely? |
|---|---|---|
| First exam and records | Intraoral exam, X-rays, photos, digital scan with iTero | No, it is done at the clinic |
| Explaining the plan | Showing the tooth movements in ClinCheck, providing the fee in writing | Partly; by video call or at the next visit |
| Getting started | Bonding the attachments, fitting the first aligners, explaining how to wear them | No, it is done at the clinic |
| Interim check-ups | Assessing aligner fit, attachments and tooth movement, with enamel reduction if needed | No; you can stay in touch with photos in between visits |
| Additional aligners (refinement), if needed | New digital scan and additional planning | No, the scan is done at the clinic |
| Finishing and retention | Removing the attachments, handing over the retainer | No, it is done at the clinic |
In some cases, a very small amount of enamel reduction between the teeth to create space (IPR, interproximal reduction) or small elastics hooked onto the aligners may be needed. These procedures are also done at the clinic and are added to the visit plan.
How many times do I need to come to Ankara?
It would not be accurate to give a single number. The main factors that determine the number of visits are:
- How complex the case is: For mild crowding, check-ups can be spaced further apart; cases involving a bite problem need closer follow-up.
- Need for attachments and enamel reduction: These procedures may be spread over several visits.
- How treatment progresses: If the teeth do not track with the plan, an additional scan and a refinement phase may be needed.
- How consistently you wear the aligners: Wearing the aligners 20–22 hours a day is the most effective way to avoid unnecessary extra visits.
The generally accepted check-up interval is 6–10 weeks. For patients who live far away, the orthodontist may, if appropriate, hand over in advance the aligner sets to be used between check-ups; however, this decision is made based on your oral health and how treatment is going. For information on the total length of treatment, see our page on how long clear aligner treatment takes.
What does remote follow-up cover, and what does it not?
Between check-ups, you can contact the clinic by phone or WhatsApp and send photos showing how your aligner fits. This contact helps you keep track of your aligner change days, find out what to do about minor problems and discuss whether you need to come in before your next scheduled visit.
However, remote contact has clear limits:
- Photos do not show the condition of the tooth roots and bone; they do not replace X-rays and an exam.
- Gum health, cavities and tooth sensitivity can only be assessed at the clinic.
- Replacing attachments, enamel reduction and digital scanning cannot be done remotely.
- No diagnosis is made and the treatment plan is not changed based on information sent remotely.
You can read more about the risks of treatments carried out without an exam, using only impressions taken at home, in our article on clear aligners ordered online.
Can I get a preliminary opinion from photos before I come?
Yes, you can send photos of your teeth before you travel to get a general preliminary opinion. This preliminary opinion is not a diagnosis; it only gives an idea of whether clear aligners are an option worth discussing for you and how much time you should set aside for your first visit. The definitive assessment is made at the exam. For the process, see our pages on the online pre-assessment and, for taking photos from the right angles, how to take smile photos.
What should I do if my aligner breaks or gets lost while I am far away?
First, contact the clinic and tell them which aligner number you are on. In most cases, the orthodontist will tell you, depending on the situation, whether to go back to the previous aligner or move on to the next one; do not make this decision on your own. Cleaning your previous aligners and keeping them in their case makes things easier in situations like this. For problems that come up while traveling, our clear aligners while traveling guide has a detailed checklist.
For urgent dental problems unrelated to your clear aligners, such as sudden pain, swelling or gum inflammation, you will need to see a dentist where you are. Letting the clinic know about the situation and the treatment you received afterward is important for keeping track of your treatment.
What should out-of-town patients plan before starting treatment?
- General oral health: If there are cavities or gum problems that need treatment, these must be addressed before aligner treatment. You may prefer to have these treatments done where you live.
- Schedule: If you visit Ankara regularly, for example during annual leave, religious holidays or the summer, the visit plan can be built around these trips.
- Suitability: Cases that need very frequent follow-up are less suited to being managed remotely. This topic is also covered on our page who clear aligners are for.
- Retention: After treatment ends, you also need to set aside time for retainer check-ups.
If you live abroad and prefer a language other than Turkish, please note that the clinic also provides care in English, German and Russian; details are on our orthodontics for international patients page.
For people who live far away, are clear aligners or braces more practical?
With fixed braces, the wires and brackets are adjusted at the clinic at set intervals; a bracket coming loose or a wire poking the cheek often calls for a clinic visit. With clear aligners, the aligners are changed at home, and some everyday problems can be managed with steps such as going back to the previous aligner. This difference can make clear aligners the more practical choice for patients who live far away.
Still, the decision is not based on practicality alone. For some bite problems, fixed braces or a different appliance may be more suitable. Which method suits your teeth is assessed at the exam; for a general comparison of the two methods, see our page on clear aligners vs. braces.
What happens if I cannot make it to a scheduled check-up?
You may miss a check-up because of work, weather or travel conditions. If that happens, call the clinic in advance and set a new date. The orthodontist may ask you to continue with the aligners you have until the new appointment or to stay on your current aligner a little longer. Putting off a check-up for a long time can lead to the aligners not fitting the teeth fully and to longer treatment, so building a realistic visit schedule is an important part of treatment. Letting the clinic know about your busy periods in advance allows the schedule to be built around them from the start.
How do I get to the clinic?
The clinic is located in Park Oran Ofis (Dükkan No:70) on Kudüs Caddesi in the Oran neighborhood of Çankaya; it is next to Panora Mall and across from One Tower Mall. If you are arriving by intercity bus, train or plane, simply enter 'Park Oran Ofis' into your navigation app once you arrive; travel time varies with traffic. The clinic is open Monday–Saturday, 09:00–20:00. Saturday appointments can make planning easier for patients who come to Ankara on weekends.
